INTERVIEW: A TIME OUT WITH FRAZE (@callmefraze)

FRAZE

FRAZE IS ONE HIPHOP BRED THAT HAS BEEN IN THE RAP GAME FOR A DECADE. IT SEEMS SO FUNNY HOW TIME FLIES. THIS DEDICATED PRODUCER/HIPHOP EMCEE HAS CARVED A SECRET NICHE FOR HIMSELF IN THE CITY OF ABUJA.

HAUSA HIPHOP WEB TOOK THE TIME TO PAY HIM A VISIT AND THIS IS WHAT TRANSPIRED DURING THE ENTERTAINING INTERVIEW.

HHH: CAN YOU KINDLY INTRODUCE YOURSELF?
FRAZE: MY NAME IS JOSEPH JONATHAN. I AM POPULARLY KNOWN AS FRAZE. I AM A GRADUATE OF UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI. I STUDIED ENGLISH LITERATURE. I GREW UP ENTIRELY IN MAIDUGURI.

HHH: FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE MUSIC GAME?
FRAZE: I HAVE BEEN IN THE MUSIC GAME FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS TO BE CANDID.IT STARTED WAY BACK AROUND 20O6 WHEN I GRADUATED FROM SECONDARY SCHOOL.

HHH: ARE YOU AN ARTIST OR A PRODUCER?
FRAZE: I AM AN ARTIST BUT I DO PRODUCE SOMETIMES. I PRODUCE MY OWN PERSONAL SONGS AND FOR SOME OF MY FRIENDS. I AM NOT A COMMERCIAL PRODUCER THOUGH.I DONT TAG MYSELF AS ONE.

HHH: CAN YOU MENTION SOME NAMES YOU HAVE PRODUCED?
FRAZE: I HAVE WORKED WITH DOUBLE DEE (TABA KAJI),AL ARYAN AND OTHER UPCOMING ARTISTS.

HHH:
HOW ABOUT AS AN ARTIST?
FRAZE: MUSIC WISE, I HAVE WORKED WITH P-SQUARE (THOUGH ON A PRODUCTION LEVEL),PUPA YANI (A MEMBER OF BLACK FACE'S TRIBUNAL), A LOT OF NORTHERN ARTISTS I CAN'T BEGIN TO MENTION.

FRAZE TOGETHER WITH PETER AND PAUL OF P-SQUARE

HHH: YOUR RECENT WORK WHICH WAS A TRIBUTE TO BARMANI CHOGE, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE PROJECT?
FRAZE: I WOULD SAY IT WAS A VERY BEAUTFUL EXPERIENCE. THOUGH THERE WERE SOME UPS AND DOWNS DURING THE WORK (WHICH IS NORMAL).BUT WHEN I TURN AROUND AND LOOK AT THE FINISHED JOB, I AM LIKE WOW! IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT.

HHH: WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH BOBBY HAI?
FRAZE: IT WAS A VERY TOUGH ONE. HE IS A NO NONSENSE GUY. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED, YOU CAN'T WORK WITH BOBBY HAI. SO I HAD TO PREPARE MYSELF AND EXPECT THE BEST AND PUT IN THE BEST AND PREPARE FOR THE WORST INCASE IT HAPPENS. I WAS'NT PREPARED FOR THE WORST THOUGH, JUST TO SAY SOMETHING FUNNY (ARTIST GIGGLING)

HHH: FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HAD THE OPPORTUNITY OF WATCHING THE VIDEO, WHO WERE THE GUEST ARTISTS IN THE SONG?
FRAZE: BILLY O, ARYAN DC, FUNKIEST MALLAM, DOUBLE DEE, ABOKINA XDOUGH, RABIU DALLE, NUHU DAN HAUSA AND AY FASHION.

HHH: BEING SOMEONE FROM THE NORTHERN PART OF NIGERIA, WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEAL?
FRAZE: POUNDED YAM AND EGUSI SOUP

HHH: THAT SOUNDS SOUTHERN TO ME.
FRAZE: YEAH....REALLY SOUTHERN INDEED (LAUGHS)
FRAZE WITH NAETO C

HHH: HOW CAN YOU SAY THE HIPHOP GAME HAS BEEN TREATING YOU AS AN ARTIST IN THE CITY OF ABUJA AND AREWA AS A WHOLE?
FRAZE: IT IS TAKING A NEW DIMENSION BECAUSE GUYS ARE REALLY LOOKING INTO FINDING OUT WHAT IS THE REAL BACKGROUND OF HIPHOP. THEY ARE REALLY WORKING TOWARDS ACHIEVING IT. THEY ARE GIVING US OUR OWN KIND OF HIPHOP.THIS IS A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT. BEFORE NIGERIAN ARTISTS DONT REALLY KNOW HOW HARD IT IS AND THEY WERE ABUSING IT. BUT WE HAVE UPCOMERS SHAPING THE GAME AND THEY ARE REALLY TALENTED AND THEY KNOW THE GAME.I AM REALLY PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN TO BE CANDID ON THAT REGARD.

HHH: DO YOU HAVE ANY ARTIST YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
FRAZE: I STILL WANT TO WORK WITH P-SQUARE. I WANT TO WORK WITH FLAVOUR, JESSE JAGZ,CYNTHIA MORGAN AND OREZI.

HHH: ANY LATEST PROJECT ON GROUND?
FRAZE: THERE IS A SINGLE WHICH SHOULD BE DROPPING AROUND AUGUST. IT IS TITLED "SAUTI" WHICH IS A SINGLE OUT OF MY UPCOMING MIXTAPE TITLED "CALL ME FRAZE". I AM PRESENTLY WORKING ON HOW TO DROP THE MIXTAPE BUT WE (MANAGEMENT) HAVEN'T CONCLUDED ON AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE YET. FANS SHOULD EXPECT SOMETHING DIFFERENT.THEY WOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY OF FEELING THE OTHER SIDE OF FRAZE. WHEN IT COMES TO BEING FRAZE, FRAZE IS UHMMM.....

HHH:
UNIQUE!
FRAZE: IT'S NOT UNIQUE ACTUALLY...HOW DO YOU CALL SOME ONE WHO CAN DO A LOT OF STUFF AT THE SAME TIME?

HHH:
YOU ARE DYNAMIC.
FRAZE: I CAN SAY I AM DYNAMIC AND UHMM....I STILL HAVEN'T GET THAT WORD.

HHH:
YOU STILL NEED A WORD TO DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE?
FRAZE: YEAH YEAH...... LIKE HOW JESSE JAGZ USED IN HIS ALBUM JAGZ OF ALL TRADE?!

HHH: SOME ONE LIKE JACK OF ALL TRADE BUT YOU ARE WAY MORE THAN THAT?
FRAZE: YEAH SOMETHING LIKE JACK OF ALL TRADE. I LOVE SINGING,THOUGH I RAP. I LOVE THIS RAGGA THING. I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC. I HAVE TRIED A LOT OF STUFF AND I JUST FIT IN PERFECTLY. BUT PEOPLE FEEL ME MORE AS A RAPPER BUT I AM COMING UP WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM THE NORMAL "ABUN DADI" THING THEY KNOW ME WITH.

HHH:
ANY WORDS FOR OTHER ASPIRING ARTISTS OUT THERE?
FRAZE: THEY SHOULD ALWAYS BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES. THEY SHOULD ALWAYS BELIEVE IN GOD. THEY SHOULD BE UNIQUE AND CREATIVE. THEY SHOULD BE DEDICATED AND DEVOTED TO WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN. THEY SHOULD KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF UPS AND DOWNS BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE THAT SPIRIT TO ENDURE, TO FOCUS, TO STRATEGIZE AND IF IT DOESN'T WORK, TO RE-STRATEGIZE.

HHH: ANY FOOD FOR THOUGHT?
FRAZE: I LOVE MAKING EVERY EXPERIENCE EDUCATIONAL.

HHH: THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
FRAZE: MY PLEASURE.

It happened that I stumbled across this dope joint from one of Beehive's most respected and talented rapper called B.O.C. This dude's got the real definition of hausa hiphop. His intellect, smooth delivery and attitude makes him a fierce enemy in the battle for king of hausa hiphop. The Bauchi state based artiste will be a force to be reckoned with in no distant time. This track was laced up and produced by MR.CLIPSE during B.O.C ’s casual visit to his studio “CLIPSE RECORDS” Jos…The two worked together in few hours and “MAI ZUGA” the great was born…..
