Hip-hop in Nigeria has taken a major step forward in the
music scene over the last decade. It has produced great acts like EEDrees
Abdulkareem, Modenine, Ruggedman, Nigga Raw,amongst others who started the game
quite early. I stand to be corrected if I say they are the pioneers of the rap
game in the industry. Other known artistes followed suit , most especially in
the north. Unknowingly to most Nigerians, a lot of the modern rappers either
come from the northern part of the country or affiliated with the northern
roots. Pherowshuz, Overdose, Edrees Abdulkareem, Terry da Rapman, M.I, Ice Prince Zamani,
Jesse Jagz, Skales just to mention a few are some of the A-list artistes the
north can brag about. Though some of them have been silent of recent, most are
still keeping the game rolling.
The most listened style of music in the northern part of the
country today is a style called ‘’nanaye’’.
This is an infusion of the hausa dialect with the hausa contemporary music.
Artistes practicing such genres include Aminu Ladan (Alan Waka), Naziru M
Ahmad, Ali Jita, Fati Niger, Maryam Sangandali and others too numerous to
mention. Other artistes that are now switching their lanes to something more
like a hybrid include Saeed Nagudu, Adam A Zango, Sani Danja, etc.
With the rise of afro-hiphop in the Southern part of Nigeria
which saw the rise of indigenous rap from artistes like Olamide, Reminisce, Vector,
Phyno, Ill Bliss, Jah Bless, Zoro Swagbag, Suspekt, Nigga Raw, etc has helped
transformed this modern genre. With this trend, the same has also triggered the
code of change in favour of hausa hip-hop in Northern Nigeria.
There has been a
great rise in indigenous rap artistes in
the north with artistes like Ziriums, Morell, Classiq, Nomiis Gee, Hafeez,
Ricqy Ultra, etc modernizing the indigenous rap game. Kano state is home for so
many talented underground hip-hop artistes like Daddy Fresh Jamal, Dr Pure, Lil
Teaxy, Double Trouble, K-Arrowz, Mixter Bash, Kano Riders, etc. Neighboring
Kaduna state is home to the upcoming crew Yaran North Side (YNS).
Hausa Hip-Hop is now taking the centre stage with the nanaye artistes now seeking collaborations
with the hausa hip-hop stars or trying to switch their game to catch up with
the trend. Only time will tell if HAUSA HIP-HOP game will catch up with the
game in the Nigerian music industry.
